Reading the Bible is one of the easiest ways a Christian mother can strengthen her faith—but that doesn’t mean reading the Bible is always easy.

After both of my children’s births, my Bible reading has fluctuated. I struggle to stay consistent during the early weeks of sleepless nights and around-the-clock nursing. Eventually I reach a point where I crave a return to normalcy with my Bible reading.

And yet…sometimes I don’t know how to begin again.

Bible reading can feel overwhelming when there’s so much Bible to read and so little quiet time as a young mother.

Reading the Bible in a year is a popular plan, but I often fear “falling behind,” or flat-out “failing.” At times, decision-paralysis surrounding those fears holds me back from even trying to get back in the Bible.

I have to remind myself of this, and maybe you need to hear it too:

When Paul talks about running the race, he’s not talking about racing the clock.

We aren’t racing to read the entire Bible as quickly as possible. Rather, we’re moving forward through a spiritual marathon, and every day is one step closer to heaven.

Reading the entire Bible is an aspirational goal. But if you, like me, feel overwhelmed by the sheer size of God’s Book, then maybe we need to start small. We need to focus on rebuilding a quality habit.

Are you looking for Bible reading tips that will build that quality habit? If the answer is yes, keep reading to find my four best Bible reading tips for Christian moms.

1. Mix and Match

We’re not aiming for a perfect reading routine, like always sitting at the kitchen table in utter silence with your physical Bible open and no straying thoughts.

As a mom with two littles, silent alone time is rare for me. If I waited for those silent, solitude moments before opening my Bible, I would rarely open it.

These days, my Bible reading is a mix of moments. Sometimes I’m reading my physical Bible. Oftentimes I’m playing an audio Bible while my hands and eyes are busy. And yes, I think we should count the moments we sacrifice what could be personal reading time to read the Beginner’s Bible or the Rhyme Bible to our little ones.

2. Use the Timer Approach

Remember, right now we’re focusing on quality over quantity. Instead of saying, “I want to read five chapters today,” try setting a timer and reading as far as you can at a natural pace.

Some days that may be two chapters. Other days it may be four. When the timer goes off, sit back and appreciate whatever portion of the Word you were able to digest.

3. Practice Task Pairing

Task pairing has helped me read more of the Bible in the last three years than ever before.

To do this, I press play on my audio Bible while doing other tasks—washing dishes, driving, or even doing my makeup.

You might be surprised at how much of the Word you can digest on a daily basis by task pairing. To do so, pick one daily task and tell yourself:

“When I do this, I will also press play on the audio Bible.”

Those extra five to ten minutes a day keep the Word of God at the forefront of your mind.

4. Treat Your Faith as Valuable

It’s easy to agree that God deserves our time and that faithful Christians should read their Bibles.

But let’s not forget this:

Your faith is deserving of 20 minutes a day.

At a minimum, your faith deserves to be fed through Bible reading.

Don’t starve your soul. Devote the attention necessary to nourish the hungering and thirsting of your soul for the Lord.

A Gentle Way to Begin Again

If these days you find yourself hungering and thirsting for God’s Word, but you’re unsure how to get back into the habit, I have a gift for you that might help.

I designed a simple Gospels Reading Guide to help you read Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in a single month (28 days of reading, 4 rest days mixed in, for a total of 32 days).

It’s 20 minutes or less of reading each day. I’ll show you how to use an audio Bible just like we discussed in this article so you can digest more of the Word without overhauling your current daily habits.

This free reading guide is perfect for the Christian woman who wants to recommit to the Word without feeling guilty for not completing reading plans in the past.

With the help of the Gospels Reading Guide, you’ll read and reflect on the perfect life of Jesus. And we’ll realize that Bible reading is easier than we thought once we find a personalized plan that fits our current life.

This plan is ideal for moms of toddlers and moms of teens alike… for women working a 9-to-5, and women working to make their house a home.

If you’re ready to start feeding and nurturing your soul, this reading guide is the perfect place to start.
